How to Nominate

The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) represents the top 1% of our residential student leaders. Of the Month awards, otherwise known as OTM’s, are one of the means NRHH utilizes to recognize outstanding students, advisors, and programs on the Stony Brook campus. OTM’s are written by students, staff, and faculty of individual schools, assessed on their campus level, and then submitted to the regional and national levels.  We encourage you to participate in this recognition process by submitting either a Program nomination or a General nomination (categories for both are listed below.)

  • Community Service Program – Part of student leadership is participation in community service. We want to recognize those projects that truly make an impact on the lives of others.
  • Diversity Program – On a campus such as Stony Brook, diversity is everywhere. There are some programs that highlight issues of diversity and make a significant contribution to increase student awareness and tolerance of diversity.
  • Educational Program – While social programs play an important part of building community, educational programs are what helps get important messages out to the community. It is through educational programs that education at Stony Brook goes beyond the classroom.
  • Social Program – Programs that have a social focus are important in helping build community and transition students to a new environment.

NRHH- Of the Month (OTM) Award for General Nominations:

To submit a general nomination in one of the following categories, please visit:

  • Adviser– An outstanding adviser is one who creates a supportive environment for the leaders they work with and are instrumental in helping the leaders they work with grow, learn, and develop.
  • Community – This category is meant for a group of individuals that came together as a community in the given month and which has accomplished many goals as a collective community.
  • Executive Board Member – This can be an executive board member of any hall council, RHA, or NRHH. Make sure you include some of the responsibilities of the position so the reader will know how they truly went above and beyond. Be sure to briefly include other activities the student is involved in. This shows that they are a well rounded leader and able to perform well in their position and still participate in other activities.
  • Resident Assistant – New and creative approaches to the position show a true dedication to helping students. Outstanding Resident Assistants have contributed to their floor/building community and offer creative programming opportunities.
  • Spotlight – This award is intended to recognize outstanding individuals who don’t fit into any set category, such as residential staff who are not senior staff (Residence Hall Directorss), Food Service Personnel, night security, etc. These individuals have made a significant impact on an individual or a community. Note: The nominee cannot be an adviser, executive board member, resident assistant, or student.
  • Student – Any student can be nominated in this category. An outstanding student has put forth special effort during the month of nomination and has shown exceptional growth. He/she has made a significant contribution to the Stony Brook community.
  • First Year Student – This category recognizes first year student leaders (any individual who started living in the residence halls this past year) who have begun their college career by contributing to the community.
  • Office Assistant – Although often unnoticed, it can be the office assistant who helps our RHDs and quad offices run more efficiently and better serve our residents. These individuals have gone above and beyond in customer service and/or have shown an exceptional commitment to their job. Note: This can not be entered for the regional or national level; however, it will be recognized at the campus level.
  • Organization- Organizations, such as student clubs, are the reason for the diversity that exists on campus. Each organization does a great job of enriching student life on campus. However, this category recognizes those organizations who have made significant contributions to the Stony Brook community during the given month.
  • Faculty/Staff Member- Often times, students are able to succeed thanks to that faculty/staff member who has been nurturing, active, and helpful. Likewise, there are faculty/staff members who organize their own projects and help positively impact the Stony Brook community. This category is meant to recognize professors, teaching assistants, counselors, and other academically related staff. It is not meant for staff members employed by campus residences (unless you are nominating them for their academic contributions).
  • Custodial Maintenance Staff- Have you ever gone to your bathroom or residence hall to see that it was spotless and beautiful? Who do you think helps keep our residence halls clean and healthy? Often times, the efforts of custodial/maintenance staff members go unnoticed, and this category is meant to recognize their contributions. Winners of this category do not move on to the regional/national level, but they are recognized locally.
  • Bulletin Board- Sometimes, it’s that amazing bulletin board that makes a project successful or that informs you of great happenings on campus, making a difference in your life. However, these bulletin boards  (and their makers) often go unnoticed. Oustanding bulletin boards are ones that have really stood out during the month in question.
  • Senior Staff Member- Outstanding senior staff members are people such as quad directors, deans, and directors who have greatly impacted Stony Brook within the given month. Few people recognize their efforts, and this category is meant to acknowledge their accomplishments.
